The drug culture
Lsd
LSD was a legal psychedelic drug up until 1968. The drug is generally ingested orally off of absorbant papers known as "blotters". These papers can have images printed on them ahead of time. The Counter Culture movement believed heavily in spiritual exploration and examination of one's essence. LSD is a psychedelic drug, which means that it can produce visual and auditory hallucinations as well as feelings of euphoria. The Counter Culture movement was all about going against the cultural norms of the day and what better way then to explore your inner spirituality and hallucinate with a drug that requires massive dosages for adverse health effects.

Marijuana
Marijuana is an entirely natural drug that is generally smoked. The active chemicals in it, called cannabinoids, are lipid soluble and create a sense of relaxation and mild euphoria. It's relevance to the Counter Culture Movement is demonstrated by it's ability to cause relaxation, deep thought, and minimal adverse health effects. Marijuana was generally frowned upon by the American generations that lead up to the Counter Culture Movement, and therefore were perfect for theCounter Culture Movement. Their mission was to evolve beyond the generations before them, and drugs were another way to achieve that.
